In our Medicare Minute series, you’ll get helpful answers to the most common Medicare questions in 60 seconds or less. Next up: What are Medicare Parts A and B?
Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient stays at hospitals or skilled nursing facilities, home health services and hospice care. You’ll likely pay no premium if you paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years, but you’ll pay deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.
Medicare Part B helps cover medically necessary doctor’s visits, outpatient care, and some medical equipment and preventive services. It does not cover routine dental, vision, and hearing. Part B carries a monthly premium, in addition to deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.
In most cases, if you’re getting Social Security benefits at least four months before you turn 65, you’ll get Medicare Part A and Part B automatically. If not, you’ll need to sign up for it.
